On my last day in India, i decided to go to where the local shop for household goods – an open market. I saw this man on the ground covered with a “white cloth”. Since it was midday and very bright, it struck me as unusual that he was on the ground and even more unusual that he had no clothes other than a white covering and a pair of sandals.
Without trying be rude or intrusive, i walked a little distance, turned again to observe what i observe. With a different angle of view and a different light trajectory, a heart breaking reality struck. This man’s left tibia, probably his fibula too, had broken, and malunited into a totally dysfunctional position, with the covering skin at great risk of breaking down either spontaneously or with minimal external trauma; the consequences of such an event would be an infection and a significant risk to his health/life.
Feeling self-conscious that i was on the verge of intruding, i asked a local trader, what this man was asking for, but without a coherent answer. I went over and gave him 100 rupees ($1.5). As i was putting it in his hand I noticed that he was relatively young, with lost eyes, desperately trying to communicate. Although I can understand Telugu and recognise Hindi, I could not understand what he was saying at all. A local trader, who was a little distance away thought he was speaking Telugu, but he clearly was not.
Another trader suggested that the man was trying to buy clothes but none of the clothes traders would sell to him. So I went to a trader paid 250 rupees (<$5) for a pair of Kentucky Blue shorts and shirt and gave them to him – he instantly put on the shorts, gaining some dignity he had obviously felt had been lost. He ten went onto buy a cap, with the money he was given, and having spoken to the local hat trader, he only changed a nominal fee for the hat.
The curious thing was that the man wanted to pay for the hat, and not simply beg for it,; he clearly had the self dignity to try to pay his way and not a habituated seeker of charity.
What is very clear to observe is that this man has been using the white sack material for covering his body for quite some time since the material has stuck to his skin over a long period of time. The distal Tib/Fib malunion is all too clear – this effectively robs his ability to work and hence survive.
